The Guild of Music Supervisors honours Patrick Watson at Canadian Sync Awards.
For those who don’t recognize the name Patrick Watson, it is still very likely that you have heard his music. Those who claim they’ve never heard of him may recognize the tune of ‘Je Te Laisserai Des Mots.’
This is due in no small part to the song’s popularity on Tik Tok, but Watson’s work made its way to the big screen long before reaching the smartphones of the world.
Since 2008, Watson’s work has woven itself into the world of television and film-, appearing in movies, Ikea ads, video games and the end of Grey’s Anatomy episodes. This is the reason his work is so recognizable, and why Patrick Watson is the recipient of the Canadian Sync Awards’ inaugural Impact Award.
The award is a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ for musicians who contributed to the sync world by composing film scores or having their music placed in films, TV shows and commercials.
With over 200 sync placements, it’s no wonder Watson was selected. A new recipient will be chosen each year by the Guild of Music Supervisors, Canada (GMSC) Sync Awards Committee.
Watson responded to the news that he had been selected with characteristic humility and by reflecting on his journey in the industry.
“I have been very lucky to have participated in the music business for over 25 years now. I really started at the very end of the CD era and to watch how my music reaches people from then until now is so wild. All the people I have met during this adventure are by far the best part.”
Watson will accept the award on June 3, 2024, at the Westin Harbour Castle.
